“In the state of Florida, fifth graders are required to take the Science Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) that assesses knowledge about Scientific Thinking as well as Physical, Earth and Space, Life and Environmental Sciences. During the 2006-2007 school year, a couple of changes were made to our school level science plan.

First, our district adopted new textbooks to accompany classroom lessons. Second, we incorporated our experiences with Zero G into appropriate lessons, hosted a Family focused science night and generated excitement/interest in science by sharing weightless stories with students, parents and staff whenever possible!

In one year, our fifth graders improved the mean scale score by nine points and our percentage of students scoring at a proficient level (3 or higher) rose from 58% in 2006, to an impressive 74% in 2007.”
