Founded in 1993, Zero Gravity Corporation (ZERO-G) is a privately held space entertainment and tourism company. Its mission is to bring the excitement and adventure of space exploration to the public through a safe, fun and cost-effective experience. Headquartered in Las Vegas, ZERO-G is co-founded by space visionary and entrepreneur, Peter Diamandis MD, veteran astronaut, Byron Lichtenberg, and NASA Engineer Ray Cronise.
ZERO-G is the first and only FAA-approved provider of commercial weightless flights for the general public, launching The ZERO-G Experience™ in October 2004. ZERO-G has since successfully flown more than 2500 passengers aboard over 100 flights. In April 2006, ZERO-G became the first commercial company to gain permission from the Kennedy Space Center to use the shuttle runway and landing facilities, to operate its weightless flights. As of April 21, 2007, ZERO-G also offers regular flights for the general public from Signature Air Terminal at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas.
In 2005, ZERO-G initiated a pilot program, flying 15 teachers selected from the state of Florida. In 2006, they formed their first partnership with Northrop Grumman, sponsor of the Weightless Flights of Discovery, to bring hands-on, weightless flight experiences and workshops to the educational community. The program utilizes hands-on science workshops and ZERO-G’s unique weightless flights to help educators share the fun and excitement of science, technology, engineering and math with their students. The program realizes ZERO-G’s mission to utilize its capabilities for the public sector as a way to further teacher and student knowledge and understanding of science, while inspiring the next generation of space explorers. In its inaugural year, the program hosted 250 teachers representing 49 states, five U.S. territories and 24 countries. Today the mission continues. Through the 2007 Weightless Flights of Discovery Program, the Northrop Grumman Foundation is providing critical math and science education to more than 450 educators in eight cities across the United States.
Continuing its community outreach efforts, on April 26, 2007, ZERO-G flew the world-renowned physicist, cosmologist, and best-selling author, Professor Stephen Hawking, into weightlessness. It was the first time Professor Hawking, the world’s leading expert on gravity, had the opportunity to experience weightlessness. Hawking’s expression, “It was amazing! The ZERO-G was wonderful. I could have gone on and on — space here I come!” is just the type of excitement we hope to share with everyone.
Space Florida is the public-private partnership responsible for promoting and developing Floridas aerospace industry. Space Florida was created by the Florida Legislature to sustain Florida's position as the global space leader. As declared in its mission statement, Space Florida drives State economic development across the global aerospace enterprise.
In May 2006, the Florida Legislature passed the Space Florida Act, consolidating Florida's three existing space entities into a single new organization. Space Florida was formed to be the single point of contact for state aerospace-related activities with federal agencies, the military, State agencies, universities, and the private sector, consolidating the roles and responsibilities of three predecessor organizations. The three former organizations and their functions were:
With the creation of Space Florida, aerospace leaders in government, military and business can partner with one organization, allowing Space Florida to serve as the lead agency for Florida's efforts to invest in aerospace development. Space Florida is guided by its Board of Directors composed of influential leaders from throughout the state; and operates under the direction of its President, Steve Kohler, who oversees a professional staff with expertise in aerospace development.
